We regularly deal with large collections of various kinds. Most recently, we received a vast collection of trench art from the estate of a lifelong collector.
The decision was taken to split it down into multiple stand-alone auctions. The sheer quantity would mean we would virtually flood the market, meaning the value could be diluted.
This, however, is in contrast to another collection of gold coins from a single owner, which we catalogued into one sale because the price of precious metals and demand far outstripped supply. The final sales total was 14% above the initial valuation, so the selling approach achieved optimum value.
Similarly, Auctioneer David Hunter recently sold an extensive collection of boxed die-cast Lansdown model cars across several toy and model sales. They sold well, attaining good value. However, the overall value could have diminished had they been in one sale.
Determining how to attain the best value for money for clients and achieve the best returns is paramount. As auctioneers, we work for the vendor, the purchasers, and the company, and we must be equally fair to all.
By selling over a number of sales, we can allow purchasers to spread the cost while optimising the total for the vendor, which also optimises the company’s commissions.
Other considerations include whether to incorporate a collection into a regular sale or have a stand-alone sale. This decision is usually based on logistics: Is there a large enough buying base? Has the auction house got space? Does it fit with the sales pattern? What are the advertising and promotion costs?
This careful approach to single-owner collections at auction has led to an increasing number placed with our team. Look out for three single-owner collections of Fountain Pens, a collection of Revelation-era Chinese items and ephemera, several large stamp collections, and a single-owner collection of Figurines, including Border Fine Arts and Beswick.
