We have a diverse collection of textiles for around the home and for wear coming up in the next Antique, Vintage, and Retro Textiles Auction, which will be online and ready for your bids from November 7th to 24th.
1818 Auctioneers’ newest valuer, Bethan, is particularly excited about the quantity of crochet and broderie tableware, handmade folk-art applique bedlinen, and a pair of hand-stitched velvet patchwork cushion covers. These soft furnishings hark back to simpler times, evoking whimsical ideals of a fresh, breezy life in a countryside cottage. As well as adding lush colour and cosy textures around the home, these examples of hand-crafted homewares can hold significant cultural value, each being unique and with a story to tell; crochet and lace pieces showcase intricate patterns that can be regionally specific, honouring the histories of local heritage and traditions.
In Cumbria, much of our heritage and traditions are tied to sheep farming and wool making, particularly associated with the Herdwick sheep breed native to the Lake District.
The sheep are known for their hardiness and ability to thrive in the region’s rugged terrain, and their Herdwick wool is similarly valued for its durability. Our upcoming Textiles sale features a collection of wool bolts, including 100% Herdwick, Jacobs, and other examples. Traditionally used for items such as blankets, clothing, and carpets, wool’s coarse texture and natural water-resistant qualities make it ideal for outdoor use and the preferred material choice for rustic textiles.
An interest in reviving historical materials and techniques has emerged in recent years in response to the influx of mass-produced plastic homeware and clothing. In an effort to preserve historical techniques and styles, many are turning to antique dealers and second-hand sourcing to shine a light on the craftsmanship and artistry of the past while making meaningful and stylish additions to the home. Take a look at our catalogues if you’d like to do the same.
