At 1818 Auctioneers, we host six Antique and Vintage Silver and Silver Plate auctions yearly. Our specialist valuer, Rowan Hughes, shares some tips for interested buyers:
“When it comes to collecting silver, there are a few notable names to look out for. One is Omar Ramsden (1873-1939), whose works are marked with ‘OR’ within the hallmarks. The Arts & Crafts movement deeply influenced Ramsden’s pieces, which feature Celtic design elements. His craftsmanship and the period’s popularity make his works highly sought after.
“Another collector favourite is Nathaniel Mills & Sons from the 19th century, identified by the ‘NM’ hallmark. This company flourished in the early 19th century and was renowned for making exceptional Birmingham silver boxes, including vinaigrettes, snuff boxes, and card cases. They produced many ‘castle top’ pieces, popular souvenirs during the railway era.
“Stuart Devlin (1931-2018) stands out for those interested in more contemporary works. This Australian metalworker’s distinctive style and innovative techniques, marked with ‘SD’ in the hallmarks, set him apart. Devlin is known for combining gold and silver to create unique textures and forms, and his limited edition ‘Surprise Eggs’ are particularly collectable.
“Lastly, Asprey & Co. and Garrard & Co. are two prestigious names that consistently perform well at auctions. Known for their quality and luxury, these companies have employed some of the finest silversmiths and designers, like Ernest Betjemann (1872-1934). They merged in the late 1990s until 2006.”
