An auction room on the Cumbria, Lancashire border will be offering up Mike Hailwood trophies, books and prints as part of their inaugural sports memorabilia sale tomorrow (Monday 17 July).
Rated ‘the greatest motorcyclist who ever lived’, but little known beyond the motorcycling world, Mike Hailwood’s feats and bravery can be measured in titles. He was 12 times a winner in the Isle of Man and won the Grand Prix Motor Cycling champions nine times.
Now in the 60th anniversary year of Mike Hailwood’s first competitive year of racing, 1818 Auctioneers will be auctioning a selection of memorabilia associated with this sporting hero who died in 1981.
Valuer David Hunter, from 1818 Auctioneers, said:
“History shows that Mike first raced on the 22nd of April 1957 at Oulton Park in Cheshire, where he was placed 11th. It’s a privilege to launch this new section by putting under the hammer the trophy from this race, perhaps his first and dated 27th April 1957. It is valued between £300 and £500.
“Other items include another trophy, with the same estimate, signed books and limited edition prints valued at £50 to £80” added Mr Hunter.
The auction will start at approximately 1pm tomorrow, following on from 1818 Auctioneers earlier sale which starts at 10am. Viewing is from 8.30am on Monday at the firm’s saleroom at Junction 36, just off the M6 on the Cumbria, Lancashire border.
